In the cosmology of the Stephen King multiverse, Gan is that which the High Speech term "The White" refers to. He is described as speaking "through the voices of the Can-Calah who men call angels," and as "denying the Crimson King and denying Discordia itself." The being is first mentioned by name in Song of Susannah, the sixth installment in The Dark Tower series. Gan is almighty, being far stronger than IT and the Turtle. King's inspiration for the word remains unknown, but he may have taken it from a Hebrew word, which means, "garden." Gan's role in the novels is very much in line with the concept of God. ![]() His wife is Bessa, who manifested herself as a rose. He is emerged from the primal chaos of the Prim, manifested himself as the Dark Tower in Mid-World. Gan also known as God or the Other is the creative overforce in the cosmology of Stephen King's universes. ![]() ![]() ![]() For example, even though he was immensely talented, and appreciated as such in his own time, da Vinci was known for not finishing works. Isaacson really humanizes da Vinci, with all the flows of a human, and the genius shared by only a chosen few. ![]() Just like any other human beings, Leonardo da Vinci is more than a painter, engineer or weapon smith, and in this biography Walter Isaacson tries to figure out this complex genius. Others might think of The Vitruvian Man or his designs of early tanks and helicopter. When most of us hear the name Leonardo da Vinci, we think of his paintings the Mona Lisa or the Last Supper. Isaacson is an award-winning, notable American biographer. Leonardo da Vinci by Walter Isaacson is a biography of the famous Italian persona. ![]() ![]() ![]() The author is a practicing musician as well as a skilled biographer (his magnificent Charles Ives was deservedly a National Book Award finalist), and his work here is truly revelatory. ![]() ![]() Brahms himself played a roll in creating his own mystery by recalling and destroying letters and documents, leaving very little save for the main outlines of his life as well as a number of anecdotes his life and personality, however, has never received the kind of close attention that Swafford has lavished on it in this all-embracing book. Although he lived well into the era of photography and almost into that of recordings-providing any interested biographer with recent and tangible grist-his life has not been as thoroughly scrutinized as those of Beethoven and Mozart, for instance. His music has never ceased to be played and loved in the century since his death (a fact that would have much surprised the composer, who imagined he would quickly go out of fashion) nevertheless, Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) has remained an elusive figure. ![]() ![]() ![]() Some of her later work in the 70s takes on a real who’s shagging who kind of vibe. These earliest novels deal with many of the same issues but the affairs are undertaken with far more seriousness, or in a reflection of the more rigid moral standards of the time in which they were written, don’t happen at all. These are the kind of affairs that, while physically consummated, most times seem to be driven much more by intellectual stimulation than physical. Lots of English folk running around having affairs or near affairs with other English folk. Sure, they may delve into politics, religion, philosophy, morals and any number of other deep thoughts, but they are at heart soap operas. ![]() You shouldn’t be.Īt the risk of gross oversimplification, I think it is fair to say that most of Murdoch’s novels are really just soap operas. Contrary to my intentions, I have probably now scared more than a few of you off. ![]() ![]() I find most of her work is pretty accessible but these early works gently ease one into the sometimes cerebral world of Mudoch’s fiction. For those who have yet to dip their literary toes into Murdoch’s work, I think her novels from the 1950s are a great place to start. Published in 1957, The Sandcastle is the third of Iris Murdoch’s 27 novels. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The novel isn’t always nuanced, and some events are glossed over in the name of moving the plot forward. A dramatic account of the Battle of Midway serves as a memorable climax to the subplot encompassing the war in the Pacific, while a dramatic confrontation between Boy Fitzherbert and his half-brother Lloyd Williams is a memorable scene from the European front. Boy Fitzherbert follows his father’s lead, becoming trapped in a loveless marriage with a woman who loves another man.įollett is at his best when there’s action and intrigue, and there’s plenty of that, especially in the scenes set before and during World War II. The Williams family’s fortunes rise as both Billy and Ethel are elected to Parliament, and the long-separated Peshkov brothers continue to grow further apart, with Grigori rising in Stalin’s army and Lev living a life of infidelity and petty crime in upstate New York. Her son is drawn to Nazism, a movement anathema to the rest of their family, and conflict ensues. ![]() Maud Von Ulrich (née Fitzherbert) is now a British expat living in Germany and married to the man she fell in love with during the Great War. Readers will see the rise of Nazi Germany, the epic battles of World War II, and the birth of the atomic era through the eyes of men and women from several countries. ![]() The second in Follett’s Century Trilogy follows the main characters from Fall of Giants and their children as they navigate the major events of the 1930s and 1940s. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Lewis George Orwell Mary Pope Osborne LeUyen Pham Dav Pilkey Roger Priddy Rick Riordan J.
